The Global Institute of Logistics, while promoting collaboration between all parities within the global supply chain, studies each stakeholder as an individual component within that supply chain. The idea is to build up a body of best practices which can be used by all players within that vertical globally in order to improve global logistics. These study groups are made up of a cross section of leading academics which the Institute have identified as thought leaders, together with leading industry executives within the vertical.
This peer group, moderated by the Institute, acts as a Knowledge network through which members Share, Learn and Benchmark their unique experiences with other group members. The Institute captures this data and packages it in a variety of outputs and transformation tools which are then made available to members and the industry at large.
Despite the well articulated importance of the role of the Port Authority within the global supply chain, there has been very little research into the experience of port authorities concerning how integration can be achieved. In 2008/09 saw the formational of a committee to formally study the subject and to provide a forum for the sharing of best practice.
Membership of this forum is now available to all parties and will be known as the Global Port Study Group.
The aim of the Global Port Study Group is to;
- Examine trends and future of port communities
- Enhance the diffusion of the excellence philosophy in port community
- Connect people who know with those who need to know
- Generate and synthesize knowledge
- Develop networking opportunities
- Obtain new ideas from various port community types and various countries
- Reviewing the relevant literature on supply chain integration and port integration in the supply chain
- Conceptualize measures for port/terminal integration in the supply chain
- Empirically test the influence of port/terminal integration in the supply chain on port competitiveness
- Outline the significance and value of the study for port operators, shipping lines, transport providers and for further research
