Container Terminal Quality SystemSince the launch of CTQI (Container Terminal Quality Indicator) in 2008 and the subsequent certification of the first terminal, CTA in Hamburg, the Global Institute of Logistics have been monitoring the effect of implementing the CTQI. It is not just a proven tool to demonstrate ‘best in class’ status, but also a continuous improvement tool which may be implemented at any terminal with, or without, CTQI certification. CTA, already one of the most efficient terminals in the world, has seen enhancements in productivity and efficiency through the implementation of the CTQI and the use of the key performance indicators to identify and rectify bottlenecks and problem areas. These improvements have returned an on-going financial benefit to the terminal. We believe this benefit can be replicated elsewhere at other container terminals, and we refer to this programme for continuous improvement as the Container Terminal Quality System.
Benchmark Against the Best, Achieve More by Aiming HighUsing the Container Terminal Performance Measures and common metrics developed for the CTQI, terminals in any port in any region of the globe may benchmark their own performance against the very best operations in the world. This will allow them to create a gap analysis, to identify areas for improvement and to develop a programme and system for continuous improvement which meets their own budgetary restrictions and operational priorities as part of a continuous DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control) cycle.
Where to Begin? The road to developing your terminal’s Container Terminal Quality System begins by joining the Institute and purchasing a copy of the CTQI standard and associated Master Tables for a total cost of €4500. This can be done through a variety of means.
- Purchase via email - ctqs@globeinst.org
- Telephone our Global Director for CTQS on +44 1304 832202
Next StepsOnce you have become a member and obtained the first benefits of membership, a licensed copy of the CTQI standard and Master tables, you will be invited to join the terminal quality forum where you will have access to the latest research, opportunities to network and share best practice with your peers and will receive regular updates and quarterly newsletters from the Institute. Terminal Quality Forum meetings will take place four times per annum and will be built around each of the four TOC conferences, taking place on the eve of the first day of conference or the evening of the last day of conference.
Furthermore, the Global Institute would recommend conducting a CTQS workshop for your terminal’s executives and senior operations staff on-site at your terminal. A workshop lasts for 3 days and two senior members from the Institute will attend, providing a unique insight into the development and deployment of the system as well as practical instruction on how to extract value from implementation and how the various metrics work and are calculated. Workshop costs will vary depending upon location and will, in any event, be subject to an individual agreement between you and the Institute.
