The HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort has continually enhanced its handling efficiency over the last few years by optimizing its processes. To become even better, it has introduced a quality management system based on the Institute's internationally acclaimed standard CTQI

How can the quality of a container terminal be measured? How can potential improvements be identified? The Container Terminal Quality Indicator (CTQI) has the answers. This internationally acclaimed standard was developed by the Global Institute of Logistics in conjunction with DNV GL and other experts in the international container port logistics industry. The HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) has introduced a quality management system based on the CTQI benchmarks and defined indicators to assess the terminal’s performance.

The system focuses on criteria such as how well the terminal is equipped with container gantry cranes, how well those perform, and how efficiently ocean-going vessels, container trains, trucks and inland ships are loaded and discharged. Infrastructural aspects such as quay length and access for heavy goods vehicles are also examined.

All of the terminal processes were defined in an organisational handbook and checks were performed to see whether the processes run smoothly. Once internal audits had been completed by specially trained Tollerort staff, DNV GL conducted external audits. As one of the first outcomes, the communication processes between the different departments were streamlined. The DNV GL auditors were very pleased with the introduction of the quality management system.

As a result, DNV GL awarded CTT the CTQI certificate on Wednesday. Dr. Thomas Koch, Managing Director at Tollerort, explained the importance of this commendation when he was presented with the certificate:

“With the help of CTQI, we are constantly optimising our processes to the benefit of our customers. The audit allows us to pinpoint and implement potential improvements. DNV GL audits us once a year. This gives us the opportunity to question our processes and steadily improve them.”

Bernhard Ständer, Key Customer Manager at DNV GL, explained the importance of the CTQI certificate as follows: “Our modern Container Terminal Quality Indicator Benchmark Standard helps to make container terminals’ performance and quality standards quantifiable and transparent.”
Kieran Ring CEO at the Global Institute of Logistics reacting to the announcement said "I am delighted to see the further proliferation of the CTQI standard in Hamburg, in this instance it will allow HHLA to evaluate the performance of sister terminals using the same standard, definitions and benchmarks."

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) focuses on optimising processes and modern tech­nology at its three container terminals in the Port of Hamburg – Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort – to further boost its handling efficiency. For instance, the container transport vehicles at CTT can carry two 20-foot containers at the same time and the tandem gantry cranes at Burchardkai can discharge four 20-foot containers from a ship in a single movement.

In 2008, the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder became the first terminal in the world to be awarded the CTQI certificate. It has also been audited annually by experts from DNV GL since then. HHLA is currently working to speed up truck handling at all its terminals with its “Fuhre 2.0” project.
