CONTAINER TERMINAL ALTENWERDER (CTA) RECERTIFIED WITH CTQS
The Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) operated by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) again scored top marks this year during the efficiency test comprising part of the international certification to “Container Terminal Quality Indicator” (CTQI) standards.
Developed by Germanischer Lloyd, the Global Institute of Logistics and further experts in the international container port logistics industry, the CTQI is a benchmark for assessing the effectiveness of port operations around the world. The certificate, which has now been awarded to the CTA for the fourth time in succession, is valid for one year.
“A terminal that is awarded the CTQI certificate is among the best in the world. The remarkable thing is that the CTA has further improved its operations during the course of this year,” said Bernhard Ständer, Global Head of Practice ISO Systems Certification at Germanischer Lloyd.
Auditors from Germanischer Lloyd assessed the CTA according to 80 points known as key performance indicators. Criteria include the level of efficiency when discharging and loading container ships, the equipment used at the terminal, together with its performance, and hinterland rail handling.
Indeed, the CTA managed to achieve record levels in its hinterland rail handling operations. An average of 64,000 TEU per month was put on container trains at the CTA in the third quarter of 2011. This represents an increase of one third over the previous record year of 2008 – and it is the highest level since the CTA was opened in 2002.
“The success enjoyed in rail handling is the result of targeted investment activities to improve efficiency, such as introducing the slot procedure. With its new record, Hamburg has strengthened its position as the largest railway port in Europe,” said Oliver Dux, General Manager of the CTA. The slot procedure enabled the CTA to implement optimized timetables for handling freight trains"
The HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder is one of three container terminals operated by HHLA in Hamburg. Thanks to its high degree of automation, the terminal, which is designed to handle efficiently large container ships, is considered the most modern container terminal in the world.
